The People Of Ghana

carThe Ghanaian people comprise of ethnic elements, diverse in their personality, historical and cultural backgrounds , welded effectively into a unitary state. This diversity may be due to the fact that the ethnic groups have migrated from divergent places to settle on the land. The Ghanaian is distinguished chiefly by the language factor. There are over 25 major languages with numerous dialects. It's estimated that as a first language, some 45% of the nation's population speak Akan, 16% speak Gur, 14% speak Ewe, 10% speak Ga-Adagme and the most ancient Ghanaian language - Guan is spoken by 12 % of the population.

 

 

Tribe And Languages Of Modern Ghana

The Akan: The Akan form the largest group. This includes the Asante , the Bono, the Denkyira, the Tufu, the Assin, the Wassaw, the Sefwi, the Akwamu, the Akwapim, the Akyem and the Adansi. The main languages they speak are Twi and Fanti. The Akan are found in Ashanti and Brong Ahafo regions; greater parts of the Western and Eastern Regions; the whole of Central Region except the Efutu and Awutu around Winneba; and a small area in the northern part of the Volta Region.

The Ga-Adangme:
The Ga-Adangme includes the Ga, the Ada , the Krobo, the Shai, the Osudoku, Labadi, Teshie, the Gbugbla, the Kpone and the Ningo. They are found south-west of the Lower Volta river. Some Adangme are also found around Agotime Kpetoe in the Volta Region. They speak Ga and Adangme.

The Guan:
The Guan includes the people of larteh, Anum, Abiriw, Adukrom, Apirede, Aseseeso, Awukugua and Dawu. Except the Anum and Boso, these Guan live on the Akwapim Ridge in the Eastern Region. The Anum and Boso are found north of Akosombo on the eastern part of lake Volta . The Efutu and the Awutu of Central Region are also Guan. They are the Nkonya people. The main language spoken by all these people is Guan.

The Nzema:
The Nzema are found in the south-western corner of Ghana , up to the Ivory-Coast boarder.
The language is Nzema.

The Ahanta:
the Ahanta are found east of the Nzema in the south-west. They occupy the area between Cape Three Points and the Pra river. They speak Ahanta

The Ewe:
The Ewe are the main ethnic group found south-east of the Volta river. Some of them are found in Togo
and Benin . They speak Ewe.

The Gonja:
The Gonja are found north of Brong-Ahafo. They have common boundaries with the Volta Region to east and Burkina Faso to the west. They speak Gonja.

The Dagomba:
The Dagomba live north-east of the Gonja. They Speak Dagbani.

The Mampusi
: The Mamprusi live in the north-eastern part of Ghana . They share boundaries with Togo to the east,
Burkina Faso to the north and Sisala to the west. They speak Mampruli.

The Dagaaba:
The Ababa arte found in the north-western part of the country. On the west, they have a common boundary with Ivory Coast and on the north Burkina Faso . The Daggaba speak Dagaare.

The Sisala:
East of the Dagaaba are the Sisala. in the north they have common boundary with Burkina Faso and the east are the mamprusi. They speak Issalan.
